    What should you do yourself?

From my experience building, I think there are many things you can do yourself without any prior experience. However, there are also those things that should be left to the professionals.

Some of the things we have been able to do ourselves without prior experience is the framing up of the walls, putting on the trusses (with direction from someone who knew what they were doing), putting on the roof boards, putting on the roofing, installing the doors and windows, installing the trim, and putting on the exterior siding.

We have also been able to do the painting, staining, installing interior tongue and groove boards, applying wood sealant, installing shelves, installing trim and molding, and installing light fixtures. We have also been able to plant trees, shrubs and other landscaping plants.

Things that I believe are best left to professionals include building the trusses, cupboards, and counter tops. Electrical wiring and plumbing are also best done by professionals.

What do you think can be handled by the amateur and what is best left to the professionals? I would love to see your comments on the discussion forum.
