One of the things I like best about our cabin is the 'pass through' counter that is part of our U-shaped kitchen. This allows me to be in the kitchen and still interact with people in the living room and dining area. I also like the idea that when we are preparing food my husband and I can both work on different sides of the counter. There is also the obvious benefit that food can be passed through to the dining area and after the meal the table can be easily cleared and items passed back into the kitchen.

The open counter also gives the compact, efficient kitchen an open airy feeling. We had thought about mounting upper cabinets above the counter but I'm so glad we didn't do this. It would have blocked the view and made the kitchen feel small.

Last weekend at a rummage sale we found two bar stools at a bargain price that are perfect for our cabin in style and color. They also fit amazingly well in the space by the counter. Now we can grab a quick meal sitting at the counter or guests can sit there, drink a cocktail, and visit while the meal is being prepared.

If you don't have room for a 'pass through' kitchen counter in your cabin you may want to consider an island. For simple instructions on building an island go to www.diyideas.com. You will find simple directions for assembling an island which will expand your counter space and yet allow you to have an open kitchen.
