Unfortunately, one of the biggest problems with building a cabin in the middle of the woods is that the cabin's power is hard to get, at best. Even if you are able to bring power to your cabin, you'll still face the fact that it's unreliable. If you build your own solar panels, you'll save quite a bit of money on power, as well as be able to tap into a reliable source of power that you can use.

There are three parts of your solar powered setup that you will have to buy. Most of these can be found second-hand and can be used to tie in with the existing power grid, if there is one, or used as a stand-alone power source.

The first part of your system will have to be the solar panels themselves. Most of these are made of silicone dioxide and are the most expensive part of the equation. 

Next, you'll need a battery bank to store the power when it is sunny, and release the power when it is cloudy. A standard marine battery will suffice in this case.

Lastly, you'll either need to invest in a 12 volt light bulbs and appliances, etc., or buy an inverter to convert the 12 volt battery power into standard 110 volt power so you can use your standard light bulbs and appliances.
